How it works
Listen. Type. See exactly what you missed.
Dictation Trainer turns listening into a precise, checkable skill: play a sentence, type what you hear, and get word-by-word feedback. Your first 3 lessons are free — no account, no card.
Listen
Play a natural-speed sentence with studio-quality audio. Replay as many times as you like, or slow it down.
Type what you hear
Write the sentence exactly as you heard it. Typing forces your ear to commit to every word — no multiple choice, no guessing.
Check word by word
Your answer is compared with the original word by word, so every miss is visible: misheard, misspelled, homophone, or skipped.
Review your mistakes
Missed words are collected for review, so the same miss stops repeating and your ear actually improves.
What word-by-word feedback looks like
A real example, from the lesson Office Questions (A2)
You hear
🔊 It starts at nine thirty in the main conference room.
You type
It start at nine thirty in the men conference room.
Word-by-word check
Itstart→ startsatninethirtyinthemen→ mainconferenceroom
Accuracy: 80%
Two tiny misses — a dropped -s and “main” heard as “men” — would slip straight past you in a multiple-choice quiz. Dictation catches them, names them, and lets you fix them.
Four kinds of misses, told apart
Not every mistake means the same thing. The checker classifies each miss so you know what to train:
Misheard
You wrote a different word than the speaker said — the classic listening gap, like hearing “work” as “walk”.
walk→ work
Misspelled
You heard the right word but spelled it wrong. It counts as spelling, not listening — so your listening score stays honest.
tomorow→ tomorrow
Homophone
You picked the wrong twin, like “their” for “there”. Your ear was right; the context work is what's left.
their→ there
Missed
A word your ear skipped entirely — usually a weak form like “at”, “of”, or “have” hiding between stressed words.
—→ at
What happens after you check
Mistakes notebook
Every missed word is saved with its sentence, ready for daily smart review that re-tests it until it sticks (Pro).
